Once upon a time… a little history<\/b><\/h2>\n
Nancy’s past is complex and fluctuating, at the crossroads of French and Germanic influences, like the rest of the north-eastern quarter of our country. The famous Charles the Bold died here in 1477. Henri de Lorraine, the Duke of Guise who inspired many novelists, had his capital here. Stanislas Leszczynski, former King of Poland and now Duke of Lorraine and Bar, offered his daughter in marriage to Louis XV in order to attach his duchy to the Kingdom of France.<\/span><\/p>\n Much later, in 1871, when Alsace and Metz were annexed by Germany, Nancy remained French and became the de facto capital of eastern France, welcoming many refugees. It was at this time that part of Moselle, which also remained French, was attached to the department of Meurthe, creating Meurthe-et-Moselle, with its prefecture in Nancy.<\/span><\/p>\n Today, Nancy is the second largest urban area in the Grand Est region, behind Strasbourg, with a population of almost 290,000, including over 50,000 students.<\/span><\/p>\n <\/p>\n The city is home to a number of renowned schools and universities, scattered across various districts. As for the city’s architecture, it contains Art Nouveau treasures from the \u00c9cole de Nancy.<\/span><\/p>\n As far as your taste buds are concerned, Nancy will be delighted to welcome you with some sweet treats: bergamots, macaroons and thistles. But savoury dishes are also delicious and well known, such as quiche lorraine, meat pie or p\u00e2t\u00e9 lorrain. The region also produces a variety of craft beers, as well as the famous mirabelle plum liqueur, a delicious little fruit typical of Lorraine.<\/span><\/p>\n <\/p>\n The city’s public transport network (known as STAN) comprises sixteen bus lines and one tram line.
